Introduction
Membership of JCI Cambridge is open to anyone aged 18-40 who has a real desire to benefit from the opportunities that we offer.
We have a special scheme that we call Candidate Membership (join for only £8 a month), which has been designed to help you find out as much as possible about Junior Chamber as soon as you join. All that we ask you to do is attend a certain number of events or activities in your first few months of membership so that you can get a better understanding of just what we can offer. Once you have done this you become a full member of Junior Chamber.
Why? An explanation for new members
Junior Chamber International (JCI) can offer so many different opportunities that some people have been members for a long time before they realise the full breadth and depth of what is on offer.
Candidate membership for new members has been designed to provide everyone with a more in-depth understanding of what Junior Chamber is all about. This should help all members gain a better understanding of how they can get involved as soon as they join.
The aim of the scheme is to encourage new members to get fully involved with the chamber quickly so that you can get the most out of your Chamber experience.
The Process
All that we ask you to do is attend a certain number of events or activities in your first few months of membership so that you can get a better understanding of just what is on offer. Once you have done this you become a full member of Junior Chamber.
We can assure you that the task is not as formidable as it may at first appear and some people can complete this within the first few months of joining!
- As a prospective member you complete a simple membership form and send it to us with the full membership fee of £96. Congratulations you have now become a candidate member.
- You will then be allocated a Chamber Buddy as a point of contact.
- Head Office will issue you with a full New Members Pack which will include background information on Junior Chamber and other useful details. It will also include a special Candidate Membership Passport which lets you keep a record of the events you have attended.
- You have a period of 6 months (but up to 9 months) to complete the suggested criteria. When you read the criteria you will see that the criteria is not too strenuous and the programme JCI Cambridge will offer you will make it easy for you to complete your candidate membership period without overloading your time.
- Once you have completed the necessary criteria, the Chamber President, together with the Regional Group Chairman, will review your Passport and if completed, we will recommend you for full membership. You will then be presented with your Membership card, certificate and pin.
What do I have to do?
We ask all candidate members to attend a minimum of four meetings either at your own chamber or one nearby.
These should be in at least two of the following areas:
- Personal Development - training evening, public speaking or debating event
- Community - planning for a local project, visiting a local charity
- Business - planning for a business event, visiting a local company
- International - to plan a project or a visit, to discuss twinning plans or arrangements for forthcoming visits
- Social - be that a visit to a pub, restaurant, visit to cinema, etc
This gives you the opportunity to learn about some of the opportunities that Junior Chamber provides and lets you meet a variety of other Chamber members.
In addition to attending these four meetings we like to encourage all candidate members to get more involved - only when you do this will you gain most from your membership.
Below is a list of possible activities for you to consider and we ask candidate members to participate in at least four of them. You can sometimes use one event for two activities - for instance if you attend a regional event and stand up and introduce yourself or speak for 2 minutes, that counts as two activities! (Remember as a JCI Cambridge member you will already have introduced yourself at your first meeting - 2 activities!)
The actual choice is between you and your Chamber President but some suggestions are given below to help you understand what is available:
- Attend your local Chamber Council Meeting or that of a nearby Chamber
- Attend a Regional Council Meeting or Regional Induction Event
- Attend an event (other than a Council Meeting) being organised by a chamber other than your own
- Speak in public for a minimum of 2 minutes - this may be introducing yourself at a chamber meeting, introducing a speaker or giving a vote of thanks at an event
- Become a member of a project team and make a significant contribution to the project. This might be a Social, Business, International, Community or Personal Development event e.g. Lord Mayor's Parade, major Community or Charity Event, Christmas Tree Appeal, Annual Dinner, Business Lecture, Twinning Week-end
- Assist at a project that your chamber is running i.e. manning the registration desk, helping out at a Christmas Tree appeal, etc
- Attend a regional event (other than a Regional Council meeting or Regional Induction event)
- Attend a national or international event
- Contribute towards promoting your local chamber internally by helping with a promotional campaign, having an article published in your local chamber or regional newsletter
- Contribute towards promoting your local chamber externally perhaps by improving your local chamber website, gaining publicity for the Chamber in the local newspaper or on the radio, promoting the chamber in any of your own work / business publications
- Make an approach to your own employer or other corporate contacts to sponsor a forthcoming event (business, community etc) or become a Board of Patron
- Recruit at least one new candidate member - for your own chamber or another chamber
- Take an active part in helping to arrange a New members / Open Evening for your local chamber
- Any other activity that you and your Chamber President agree is suitable!
Once you have progressed beyond these first two stages of membership - Candidate and Full - there are two special awards that you can apply for - Level 1 Achievement and Level 2 Achievement, both of which demonstrate further involvement in Junior Chamber. Full details will be provided in your Introductory Pack.
Remember - the more you get involved, the more you will benefit personally in terms of new skills gained, experiences enjoyed and employability increased.
